Microscopy

The Facility provides access to microscopes and imaging equipment for studying both live and fixed cells, including live tissue. Moreover, support the visualization of subcellular events and cell dynamics.

Before using the instruments for the first time, contact the trainers below for mandatory training.
Users are expected to perform experiments independently and must be adequately trained to ensure proper use of the instruments.

How to make reservation

Prior to use, it is mandatory to reserve instruments through the booking platform of the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

The Facility’s staff are available Monday to Friday during normal working hours (09:00-16:00).

All users of the laser scanning confocal microscope MUST take the online Laser Safety course, located formazione@unipd.it, before their first training session.

Prior to the first use of the instruments, please contact Dr. Ivan Marchionni for the mandatory training.

Getting trained by another user is neither sufficient nor permissible for independent operation of the microscope.

Opening and closing

Monday - Sunday  |  24h

  1. The Facility reserves the right to revoke a person’s certification should they repeatedly damage equipment, flaunt Facility procedures.
  2. Removal of equipment or reagents from the Facility without authorization from a Facility staff person is forbidden and grounds to revoke user certification.
  3. Do not swap accessories (e.g sample holders, stages, fluorescence cubes, microscope objectives) between microscope stations within the Facility.
  4. Please start your session punctually (on evenings and weekends as well as regular hours).
  5. The billing starts automatically from the start of your session.
  6. Report any damages immediately to the microscope facility.

Before your session
  1. Check that the previous user is fully logged out.
  2. Turn on the microscope, PC and camera for the acquisition of the images as described in the manual.
  3. Log on using your personal ID user and password.
  4. Don't turn on components you won't use.
During your session
  1. Do not use gloves during your session(s).
  2. In case you need to change the objective, clean the lens from the excess oil/water by gently wiping the lens with optical soft cleaning paper soaked with specific detergent supplied by the facility.
  3. Do not rub the lenses.
  4. Use appropriate microscope mechanical stage depending on your sample.
After your session
  1. Remove the slide(s) or and any sample(s) used.
  2. Leave the microscope and room clean and ready for the next user.
  3. Clean any oil/water objectives you used.
  4. Turn each microscope off as described and all the components that have been turned on.
  5. Any images/files left on the computer hard-drives are unsafe and may be deleted without warning.
  6. Transfer all your data to a safe location as soon as possible after acquisition. Don't leave behind copies of your files because the servers/computers quickly get over-loaded by the volume of image files produced.

Specific indication for this facility

When making your reservation, indicate the name of the user, the group leader, and lab phone number.

If necessary, reservations can be cancelled no later than 24h prior to the reserved slot.
