Genomics
The DSB Genomics Facility is a state-of-the-art technological unit dedicated to supporting research across departments through advanced genomic approaches.
Located on the 5th floor North (room 46, Geotec 06 091), the facility develops and optimizes protocols to produce high-quality material suitable for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analyses.
It also provides comprehensive bioinformatic analyses and detailed reporting to assist research groups in their projects and publications.
The facility offers full support in study design to ensure that sequencing and bioinformatics strategies are appropriately tailored to each project’s goals.
Our staff consult with research groups on specific requirements and serve as the primary point of contact for the duration of the project.
By providing expertise, infrastructure, and personalized support at every stage of genomic studies—from sample processing to data management and bioinformatic analysis—the Genomics Facility fosters innovation and ensures flexibility to meet evolving research needs. Its integration of cutting-edge sequencing technologies with customized protocols guarantees continuous advancement in biomedical research.
Before using the instruments for the first time, contact the trainers below for mandatory training.
Users are expected to perform experiments independently and must be adequately trained to ensure proper use of the instruments.
How to make reservation
Prior to use, it is mandatory to reserve instruments through the booking platform of the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Facility equipment
Before your session
Groups should schedule the service only after meeting with the Genomics Facility staff in order to discuss in detail the experimental setup and assess the analysis requirements.
During your session
RNA extraction service: The Genomics Facility receives samples (cells pellets or frozen tissues) exclusively on dry ice to minimize RNA degradation.
A positive control is included in all extraction experiments to ensure that any observed RNA degradation can be attributed to the condition of the samples prior to receipt.
RNA Quality Control service (Qubit): If RNA extraction is performed by group, sent to facility 5ul of extracted RNA in a tube 0.5ml or 1.5ml. (Don’t use 2ml tube)
Bioinformatic analysis service: If a group performs sequencing independently, the Genomics Facility does not guarantee bioinformatic analysis. Groups must discuss their project with the staff before booking service to clarify what support can be provided. NGS raw data (.fastq.gz) will be stored on the HPC at the Department. A backup of each file will be created to minimize the risk of data loss. Data will be deleted after manuscript publication and concurrent submission to a public data GEO repository (Gene Expression Omnibus).
Specific indication for this facility
Service can be booked through the booking platform of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, at https://facilities.biomed.unipd.it/, using your laboratory’s account. If you don’t have an account to access the booking platform, please contact our ICT service staff at ‘informatica.biomed@unipd.it’.
When making your reservation, indicate:
- name and email of the USER
- name and email of the GROUP LEADER
- Project title
- Description of project (facultative)
- Organism used
- Number of samples
- Service request (RNA extraction, QC (Qubit), Bioinformatic analysis)
If necessary, reservations can be cancelled no later than 24h prior to the reserved slot.
Please notify the technical staff in case of booking cancellation.
Description of provided service
RNA extraction: RNA (from cell pellets or frozen tissues) is extracted and purified using a column-based purification kit.
Quality control (QC): Extracted RNA is analyzed using Qubit 4.0 fluorimeter in order to estimate the amount of extracted RNA
Bioinformatic analysis: Bulk RNAseq data will be analyzed using advanced tools and software.
The goal is to generate detailed and interpretable reports, including data visualizations and analytical results.
These reports will facilitate the interpretation of findings by researchers, enabling a rapid and effective translation of genomic data into knowledge applicable to biomedicine.
